Kolya Semenov grew up in a village, in a fishing village near the river. He likes a girl who wants to become an actress. Once Kolya steals a gazelle to impress the girl. Ahead of him are several years of roads and hills.

For student Masha Matushkina, everything in life could be fine, if not for one big problem: her father who raised her alone is in command of the military registration and enlistment office. Because of this, not a single guy near Masha lingers for a long time - one after another they leave to undergo military service by conscription to the farthest corners of Russia. Telling the story of Archimedes, one of thousands of refugees who left Greece for Czechoslovakia at the end of the 1940s, as the Greek civil war meant many communist fighters sought refuge in communist countries. Told through the eyes of Archimedes’ grown-up nephew Aris, who recalls how his uncle's life changed when he escaped from Greece to Czechoslovakia with the naive dream of a rosy future under a socialist regime. But all was not as it seemed.

After a few years in a big world Kolya is returning to his village and life in the village is going wild.
